What do you need to go to the Berlengas?

Berlenga Island is a Biosphere Nature Reserve and therefore has a limited number of visitors per day (decree 19/2022 of January 5th). It is compulsory to register and pay an access fee to enter the island. You can register via the platform(here).

What is the fee?

Three euros (€3) per day per person for access to the land area of Berlenga Island. Visitors over the age of 6 and under the age of 18, and visitors over the age of 65 pay 50% of the fee. Residents of the municipality of Peniche are exempt from paying the fee.

Framework

It is not up to us as a tour operator to verify or check whether you have already registered and paid the tourist tax. The local bodies of the National Maritime Authority, the ICNF, I. P., and the municipality of Peniche are responsible for monitoring compliance with this ordinance.

Visiting Berlengas Island without paying the tourist tax constitutes a minor environmental offense, punishable by Law 50/2006, of August 29, with a minimum fine of €500.

Berlengas Island has a daily limit of 550 visitors at the same time.

Fee:

Normal: €3
Under 5s: €0
From 6 to 17 years old: €1.5
Over 65s: €1.5

They are exempt from paying the fee, without prejudice to the obligation to register in advance on the electronic platform for controlling access to Berlenga Island, under the terms of Ministerial Order 30/2021, of February 10:

3 – The users referred to in the preceding paragraphs must have supporting documentation attesting to their condition.”

Will the weather be good over the next few days?

If there is availability in the boat’s schedule, it’s because there are safe conditions for sea transportation to the island.

In any case, you should check the weather situation on the island to plan the most appropriate clothing and improve your activity plan. You can check it out(here)!

Is it normal for people to feel sick?

Although our boats are stable and safe, the sea off the west coast of Portugal is undulating, so it’s easy to get seasick.

If you don’t travel by boat regularly, we recommend that you take one tablet 30 minutes before boarding.

If you suffer from chronic motion sickness, where you get seasick even in the car, we recommend that you take two tablets 30 minutes before boarding and that when you sail, you try not to focus on any specific point, but try to relax.

What to wear and take with you?

Ideally, you should choose comfortable clothing and footwear for this trip to the Berlengas. If the weather is warm, it’s worth taking a bathing suit and towel and trying out the clear – and cool – waters! – Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro, next to the anchorage. In summer it’s also important to take a hat and sunscreen.

If the weather is rainy, you should bring a raincoat or even an umbrella.

As it’s not guaranteed that the few stores on the island (a supermarket and a restaurant) will be open, it’s best to take a bottle of water with you and an snack. If you’re considering having lunch on the island, it’s best to check with the company you’re traveling with to see if the restaurant will be open.

What to look out for?

In order to help preserve Berlenga Island, it is important to respect the following rules:

  1. Ride only on the tracks and respect the signs.
  2. When walking around the island, don’t throw stones into the sea.
  3. Put garbage in the appropriate places or take it back with you.
  4. Do not collect plants or geological samples.
  5. Keep your distance from animals and do not feed them.

It can also help keep the island free of predators:

  • Always close bags and suitcases and pay special attention to camping equipment,
  • If you see rats or rabbits on the island, inform the nature wardens,
  • Do not move, remove or damage the traps placed on the island.
