Do I have to pay a tourist tax?

What do you need to go to the Berlengas?

Berlenga Island is a Biosphere Nature Reserve and therefore has a limited number of visitors per day (decree 19/2022 of January 5th). It is compulsory to register and pay an access fee to enter the island. You can register via the platform(here).

What is the fee?

Three euros (€3) per day per person for access to the land area of Berlenga Island. Visitors over the age of 6 and under the age of 18, and visitors over the age of 65 pay 50% of the fee. Residents of the municipality of Peniche are exempt from paying the fee.

Framework

It is not up to us as a tour operator to verify or check whether you have already registered and paid the tourist tax. The local bodies of the National Maritime Authority, the ICNF, I. P., and the municipality of Peniche are responsible for monitoring compliance with this ordinance.

Visiting Berlengas Island without paying the tourist tax constitutes a minor environmental offense, punishable by Law 50/2006, of August 29, with a minimum fine of €500.

Berlengas Island has a daily limit of 550 visitors at the same time.

Fee:

Normal: €3
Under 5s: €0
From 6 to 17 years old: €1.5
Over 65s: €1.5

They are exempt from paying the fee, without prejudice to the obligation to register in advance on the electronic platform for controlling access to Berlenga Island, under the terms of Ministerial Order 30/2021, of February 10:

a) Residents in the municipality of Peniche under the terms of Article 38(3)(b) of Decree-Law 142/2008, of July 24, in its current wording;

b) Children up to the age of 6 under the terms of Article 3(1)(b) of Ministerial Order 122/2014, of June 16, as amended.

3 – The users referred to in the preceding paragraphs must have supporting documentation attesting to their condition.”

Will the weather be good over the next few days?

If there is availability in the boat’s schedule, it’s because there are safe conditions for sea transportation to the island.

In any case, you should check the weather situation on the island to plan the most appropriate clothing and improve your activity plan. You can check it out(here)!

Is it normal for people to feel sick?

Although our boats are stable and safe, the sea off the west coast of Portugal is undulating, so it’s easy to get seasick.

If you don’t travel by boat regularly, we recommend that you take one tablet 30 minutes before boarding.

If you suffer from chronic motion sickness, where you get seasick even in the car, we recommend that you take two tablets 30 minutes before boarding and that when you sail, you try not to focus on any specific point, but try to relax.

What to wear and take with you?

Ideally, you should choose comfortable clothing and footwear for this trip to the Berlengas. If the weather is warm, it’s worth taking a bathing suit and towel and trying out the clear – and cool – waters! – Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro, next to the anchorage. In summer it’s also important to take a hat and sunscreen.

If the weather is rainy, you should bring a raincoat or even an umbrella.

As it’s not guaranteed that the few stores on the island (a supermarket and a restaurant) will be open, it’s best to take a bottle of water with you and an snack. If you’re considering having lunch on the island, it’s best to check with the company you’re traveling with to see if the restaurant will be open.

What to look out for?

In order to help preserve Berlenga Island, it is important to respect the following rules:

  1. Ride only on the tracks and respect the signs.
  2. When walking around the island, don’t throw stones into the sea.
  3. Put garbage in the appropriate places or take it back with you.
  4. Do not collect plants or geological samples.
  5. Keep your distance from animals and do not feed them.

It can also help keep the island free of predators:

  • Check your luggage before boarding and make sure you are not bringing any animals, plants or seeds onto the island,
  • Always close bags and suitcases and pay special attention to camping equipment,
  • If you see rats or rabbits on the island, inform the nature wardens,
  • Do not move, remove or damage the traps placed on the island.
What happens in the event of bad weather?

If the weather conditions are not favorable and the crew decides that it is better not to go out to sea, the trip will be canceled after which you can reschedule by phone (+351 262 407 489) or get your money back.

How do I change the date or time of my reservation?

I found the tour without a life jacket and without support for people who feel sick on the boat to be irresponsible.

It was an excellent and wonderful experience. The employees were pretty friendly. Susana and Vítor provided a great service, they left us all happy and full of laughter during the whole trip. They explained the landscapes and history to us very well. Their company is the only one that can be very close to the coast. Besides, after leaving for twenty or so minutes, it was lucky that we found many dolphins by their good guide. Comparing with my experience in Madeira on a tour boat, in Setúbal it was much better and we loved it a lot. Without a doubt, we will go there and take more people. I want to give ten stars!!! ❤️

Fabulous experience!!! Great communication. Victor and his daughter were very gracious, clean boat, perfect for the excursion. Saw so many dolphins. Swam in a beautiful clear water green grotto. A very exciting memorable day! Thank you Edgar and group!
We had an amazing time on the dolphin and coastline tour with Arrabida Sea tours! Our guides were knowledgeable, professional, experienced and very friendly. They were kind to my children and very eager to point out and help them see dolphins! It took a while before we saw any dolphins, and we were worried they might give up and say no dolphins today, but they kept looking and calling other boats. And sure enough, we saw dozens. It was truly magical and something my kids will never forget! And at age 74 my mom saw dolphins for the first time in her life, and experienced it with her only grandchildren! It was a fantastic day filled with a lifetime of memories!Do not hesitate and do not book with anyone else. If you have any questions, concerns, issues, send a WhatsApp or call/leave a voicemail. I did, and I am so thankful I did. They answered my voicemail and my WhatsApp and really took care of my family. Treated us like their family! We can’t wait to return and book another adventure! THANK YOU!

We used Arrabida Sea Ventures to book a private sailing boat. It was the highlight of the trip for us. We truly enjoyed our time with the crew and the incredible sightseeing that you can only get from the water. Highly recommended.
Great tour with a good view of the occean and a comfortable boat/crew. We saw the dolphins close to the boat and were next to them for a long time. When the dolphins needed peace, we drove to the coast and looked at some of the beaches.Would definately reccomend this company!

The best captain in Sesimbra! Available, helpful, friendly, extraordinary, no adjectives possible for the trips we made. Over the years we have done several and I can assure you that the last one is always better than the penultimate. Don't hesitate, this is your choice for a Genre adventure. P.S. for those who can, ask to see the sea on fire....
